In Bloom by C. J. Skuse

We’re back and Rhiannon’s pregnant. Is she happy about it? Pfft, if you’ve read the first book, you’ll know the heightened emotions of pregnancy are hardly going to go down well with Rhiannon. Plus that idyllic father-mother-in-a-cute-cottage scenario isn’t on the cards anymore.

She’s managed to keep out of trouble from her previous kills but now the investigation is underway and she’s called as a witness in connection, Rhiannon needs to keep her wit when she’s around eagle eyed Detective Géricault, because this Detective seems to have sensed that all is not as it seems.

As if that wasn’t stressful enough, her baby is talking to her. Letting her know that killing will put them both at danger, but will Rhiannon be able to avoid temptations when they’re dangled right in front of her?

This is an absolute cracking follow up to Sweetpea and carries on Rhiannon’s diary directly from the last day of book one. Letting go of her previous friends, she’s now got herself a new bunch of “mummy” friends, how long will these ones last?

Skuse has developed Rhiannon even further in this book and I saw a lot more depth to her complex thoughts and personality. I was particularly drawn to her friendship with Marnie – here we see Rhiannon at her best: she’s a protector of the young, innocent and weak. Secondly, the final few chapters not only ‘packed a punch’ due to the drama unfolding but again, they showed Rhiannon taking responsibility for her actions and I really admired her for that… have no fear though, she’s still Rhiannon and she’ll make sure everyone else takes responsibility for their actions too! (Dun dun dunnnnnn!)

Whilst Rhiannon still comes across just as bloody hilarious in this one, we also see her moodier sides… f**k me don’t cross her when she’s hormonal guys!

It’s as non-PC as the first, gives us our Rhiannon-fix and has an end that crackled with tension; and like thunder it left you waiting for the storm… roll on book three!

In Bloom is out now in paperback and eBook versions with HQ.

*Gifted – I was lucky enough to grab a copy of this book at a HQ event*

Until next time, Chloé x
